Practice Makes Perfect Challenge Games

The Backyard Practice Pro provides unique training games for Baseball/Softball, Football and Soccer. The games emphasize the development of key physical skills as well as knowledge of basic rules and key components for each sport. And best of all, they are fun to play either alone or by challenging a friend. Play in either Head2Head format against a friend or challenge yourself in MVP format.

Baseball Games include Golden Glove, Strikeout, Perfect Game and Backyard Series and involve the following targets.

Cutoff Throw: 1 pt – make this throw to turn extra base hits back into singles!
1^st Base: 3 pt – improve your infield defensive average by making the most common put out every time!
Around the Horn: 6 pt – hit an infielder’s mitt to turn a double play or end a rundown!
Stealing Second: 9 pt – cut down runners from home plate with this long range throw!
9 Box Strike Zone: 6 or 9 pt – young players can practice getting the ball over the plate. Advanced players can work the corners and edges for any sequence of pitches to get the “K”!

Football Games include Red Zone, 2-Minute Drill and Challenge Bowl and involve the following targets.

Shotgun Snap: 1 pt – a critical element of every offensive play. Practice and nail it every time!
Slant/Cross: 3 pt or 5 yds – make this high percentage pass across the middle to pick up short yards or break a big run after the catch!
Quick Out: 6 pt or 10 yds – isolate a receiver on a quick out and pick up tough yards to move the chains!
Post/Corner: 7 pt or 20 yds – this timing and touch pass puts the ball where only your receiver can catch it. Touchdown!

Soccer Games include Strikeforce, Shoot Out and Backyard Cup.

Throw In: 1 pt – a critical skill required to put the ball back in play!
Pass: 1 pt– Ball control is key in order to work into position for a Shot on Goal or to clear an offensive strike!
Free Kick: 2 pt – for an open goal always go for the center!
Low Corner Goal!: 3 pt – goalies have to commit to cover these areas! Shoot to the low corners to get a goalie on the ground and open up the goal!
High Corner Goal!: 3 pt – goalies will struggle to get a hand on shots to these areas! Even if they do chances are they won’t control it and you may get an easy open goal tap in!

Former longtime Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith did not achieve greatness by accident, luck, or even chance.

Hard work is what got the NFL’s all-time leading rusher (18,355 yards) from the hopeful valleys of Pop Warner football all the way to the peak of the mountain – the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Smith, 41, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, in August 2010, his first year of eligibility.

Climbing a mountain can be related to the journey of one’s life. The bottom is where everyone starts out, and the top is where everyone wants to be. Smith mapped out his journey early on in life as a player for Pop Warner in Pensacola, Fla., and then as a high school football star at Pensacola’s Escambia High.

“At the age of 21, I already knew what I needed to do in order to make my mark in history. I wanted to become the all time leading rusher. Period,” Smith said during his speech at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement ceremony.

Smith got his start playing with Pop Warner. The National Football League Players Association estimated that 60-70 percent of current NFL players participated in the Pop Warner program. Smith, who received Pop Warner’s Inspiration to Youth Award in 1996, had this to say about his childhood playing experience: “When I played Pop Warner Football, I had a great deal of fun. You could be a kid, you could run around, you could laugh, you could holler. Those were great moments.”

Not only did Smith excel as a youth athlete, but he also accomplished numerous goals and broke several rushing records while playing for the University of Florida and as a professional with the Dallas Cowboys. Considered by many NFL scouts to be too small (he’s 5-foot-9) and too slow, Smith was drafted in the first round by the Cowboys in 1990 with the 17th overall pick. Following a 12-year NFL career, Smith was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and a three-time Super Bowl champion.

As Smith ascended the mountain, he leaned on hard work, dedication and passion to get him to where he wanted to be. These traits translate back to the importance of practice. When a young athlete practices with conviction and consistency, he or she increases their chances of becoming a better player. You cannot climb a mountain without tools. Young players need tools and support as well, such as a strong family environment to encourage them, influential coaches to take their game to a whole new level.

“My father’s words supported me … I began to feed the dream with my passion and dedication, I loved the sport so much all I wanted to do was just play it,” Smith said.

The story of Emmitt Smith’s climb to the top is one we all can learn from. Practice More. Play Better.

The “Practice-Makes-Perfect Challenge” will be coming to several football games in the Charlotte area soon, including two Carolina Panthers’ home games: Oct. 10 vs. Chicago Bears and Oct. 24 vs. San Francisco 49ers. We’ll also be taking the “PMP Challenge” to local middle and high school football games in October and November. North Charlotte Prep Colts Strike First in Week 4

Colts Kick Off

The North Charlotte Prep Colts faced the Titans West team in Week 4 of the Piedmont Youth Football League.

The Colts kicked off to start the game and held the Titans to a “3 and out” in their first possession, including a sack by #31 Ethan Essex. On the Colts first possession Colt QB #35 Cameron lead the team down field and scored on a 15 yards sweep to the left. The Colts converted the extra point and lead 7-0. The Colts gave up one TD in the 1st half and took a 7-6 lead into Halftime. The Colts played a solid second half on both sides of the ball but gave up two TDs.

Although the Colts lost 18-7, the preps played their best game yet, with solid defense and an improving offense. Great job by the players and the coaching staff.

Colts Center Ethan Essex Stares Down Steel Curtain

The North Charlotte Colts played an unbeaten and speedy Piedmont Youth Football League Steelers team on Saturday, September 18, 2010. The Colt defense played tough as usual and the offense showed some good progress on several possesions, but in the end the Steelers were too tough and booked a 25-0 win, moving to 4-0. Colts are still looking for their first “W”. Go Colts!
